Situated in the southeastern part of Seoul, Gangnam is a relatively new urbanized part of the city compared to sections north of the Han River. Gangnam-gu is located in South(Nam) of the Han River(Gang), thus giving it the name, Gangnam. This district was originally a part of Daewang-myeon and Eeonju-myeon in Gwangju-gun, Gyeonggi Province during the Joseon Dynasty.

On January 1, 1963, parts of Gwangju-gun and Siheung-gun of Gyeonggi Province were annexed to the city of Seoul by Law no. 1172, thereby becoming branch offices Eeonju and Songpa. On July 1, 1973, based on Presidential Decree no. 6548, for dong(villages) of the Eonju branch office, Jamsil-dong of Seondong-gu, Irwon-dong of the Songpa branch office, Segok-dong Seocho-dong, Yangjae-dong, and Jamwon-dong became the Seongdong-gu Yeongdong Branch office.

On October 1, 1975, Presidential Decree no.7816 separated Gangnam-gu from Seongdong-gu, and the Yeongdong Branch Office was eliminated.

On January 1, 1988, Presidential Decree no. 12367 separated Gangnam-gu and Seocho-gu as independent districts. As a self-governing district since May of 1988, Gangnam-gu consists of 26 administrative districts and 15 legal districts and has an area of 39.54Km.

Gangnam-gu boasts of a well-organized road net and its streets are diverse in characteristics: Teheran-no is the center of international finance, trade, and business. Apgujeong-no and Cheongdam-no are the center of art and fashion, while Hakdong-no in the Suseo/Daechi zones serve as residential areas. Most Gangnam residents live in high quality housing complexes such as apartments or villas.

Convenient public transportation systems, including subways and buses, plenty of cultural and c onvenience facilities, and some of the best educational facilities in Seoul provide well-to-do Gangnam residents an excellent quality of life.
